How it works
Most calories come from a small set of regions (US Great Plains, Brazil's Cerrado, the Ukraine/Russia Black Earth, India's Punjab, China's North China Plain, Argentina's Pampas). Research (Gaupp et al., 2020) found the chance of simultaneous maize failure jumps from a 6% baseline to 40% at 1.5C of warming and 54% at 2.0C. Cities keep only 5-7 days of food, half the world's food relies on natural-gas-based synthetic fertilizer, and key aquifers are being drained.
Why it matters
A single bad year could cascade fast — the 2010 Russian heatwave and export ban helped spark bread riots in Egypt and the Arab Spring — showing how fragile just-in-time global food supply is.
