There's a fix to keep quantum computers from someday cracking Bitcoin — but most people won't bother to use it in time.
Who they are

Bitcoin BIP-360 (Pay-to-Merkle-Root), a proposed change to how Bitcoin transactions are secured.

What they do

It's a technical escape hatch that removes the part of Bitcoin most vulnerable to future quantum computers.

How it works

It disables the quantum-weak 'Taproot key-path' spending so funds are protected against a powerful quantum computer recovering keys — but each user has to actively move their own money to the new format, and doing so makes transactions noticeably bigger and more expensive.

Why it matters

The engine's read is that most ordinary holders won't migrate in time, so on 'Q-Day' their coins could be swept up by quantum-ready attackers — a huge wealth transfer from the unprepared. The engine holds several readings at once (a coordinated defense, a normal security upgrade, or a voluntary migration most won't do) without settling on one.
