Separate from any question of whether fringe researchers are being targeted, this tracks the genuinely elevated death rate you would expect anyway in those communities: chronic stress, social isolation, avoidance of doctors, and suicide after professional exile. It exists to measure the background noise so that any real targeting signal could be told apart from it.
